About me

Name’s Akbar Makani, Vice President of SIFE AUT (Students in Free Enterprise). I’m part of an organization where members create opportunities through projects to empower New Zealand communities. I have had the privilege to be part of an inspirational journey. As a student, sharing this experience with my friends has been one of the best decisions I’ve made during my university career at AUT.

Also the co-founder of Attend.co.nz, a platform for all professional and academic events enabling NZers to attend events relevant to their industry. I also enjoy networking, entrepreneurial ventures, working at the High Court and lots of tennis!.

My parents always told us three brothers, “how fortunate we are compared to those who don’t have a roof over their heads.” As a representative of the worldwide Ismaili Muslim Community, I’ve learnt to live by an ethical framework that draws social responsibility.

This event gives us an opportunity to reaffirm our duty to care, be compassionate, and to improve the lives of those around us, recognizing the importance of human dignity which is inherent in each of us.

In the words of Desmond Tutu: “My humanity is bound up in yours, for we can only be human together.” BigSleepOut will let us find a way to actualise the ethical conviction in New Zealand.

Why am I doing the LIFEWISE Big Sleepout?

As a youngster that enjoys his nights out in the city, my attention is always drawn towards the less fortunate making the most of what they have to their name and calling the streets their home. I’ve always wanted to give them more than a pack of fries or some small change. With the Big SleepOut, it’ll allow us to collectively make a bigger difference in their lives.
