Cathy Casey

About me

Cathy has been heavily involved in local government for the last 16 years, most recently representing the Eden-Albert ward on Auckland City Council. In October 2010 she was elected to the Auckland Council to represent the new larger ward of Albert-Eden-Roskill.

She has an MA and PhD in Sociology and prior to entering local government had a successful university research career in the field of police, crime and justice including time leading the criminal justice programme at the Institute of Public Policy at AUT University.

Cathy is mum and step-mum to three teenagers. The busy household also includes her two little dogs. She is a dog lover and member of SPCA and SAFE. She is also a published author and keen artist and likes to break into song occasionally.

Why am I doing the LIFEWISE Big Sleepout?

Auckland Council has taken a leadership role in raising awareness about the issue of homelessness and since 2004 has funded a homeless action plan which has the support of all the local agencies involved with homelessness. But local authorities cannot do it alone; it is time the Government opted in as a funding partner. To end homelessness in New Zealand we need the support of Government and a clearly defined legislative and policy framework to ensure this vulnerable sector of our society is properly provide for. I'm sleeping rough on 7 July to send that message to the beehive.
