Magdel Hammond – Connect Supporting Recovery, Services Manager

Magdel Hammond

About me

I am originally from South Africa and have been in New Zealand for nine years. I live in Orewa with my family and five pets.

I work as Services Manager at Connect Supporting Recovery and have been there for over 8 years. I originally trained and worked as Social Worker in the mental health and medical fields, before joining the corporate HR sector for a number of years and running my own HR consultancy.

When moving to New Zealand I decided to go back to where my heart was and started working in the mental health sector again and I love my work and find it the most fulfilling role I have ever been in.

I did a lot of voluntary work when I lived in Namibia, specifically for the SPCA and HIV/AIDS Education sector in Namibia.

I also love singing and sing with a South African female vocal group here in Auckland. The rest of my spare time I spend next to sports fields while cheering on my children in their respective sporting activities.

Why am I doing the LIFEWISE Big Sleepout?

Raising awareness and countering poverty and homeslessness. I have seen the devestating effect homelessness can have on people and would be happy to form a small part of making a difference for the future.
